Angry Verizon clarification of "Unlimited Plan" and "Grandfathered in"

Short story: If you want unlimited you are going to pay FULL price for the phone.

Verizon has clarified more about this. As suspected, it will be discontinuing unlimited data once the share plan arrives for those that want to purchase a subsidized phone through the carrier or renew their contract. Here is Verizon’s updated comment:

    • Customers will not be automatically moved to new data shared data plans. If a 3G or 4G smartphone customer is on an unlimited plan now and they do not want to change their plan, they will not have to do so.
    • When we introduce our new shared data plans, Unlimited Data will no longer be available to customers when purchasing handsets at discounted pricing, i.e. Signing new contracts.
    • The same pricing and policies will be apply to all 3G and 4G LTE smartphones
    • Customers who purchase phones at full retail price and are on an unlimited smartphone data plan, will be able to keep that plan.

Even that report leaves questions. I take this to mean any new subsidised hardware requires a new contract. To maintain Any grandfathered plan means full price hardware.

I wouldn't mind paying retail to keep unlimited. Between the wife and I, we eat up about 50gb a month. I doubt they'll have a share plan that high for what I'm paying now.

Except I DO mind paying full retail. Where's the love from Verizon for being a long term customer? BUT, I will fork out the cash up front in order to keep my unlimited data.

I just checked and the wife and I only use about 2-3 GB, but I'm with you. I still want the option to go zombie face eating crazy and stream 100GB that one month if I so wanted. So I want to keep my unlimited plan as is.

Because they are just giving you a line of crap when you can and they tell you "We appreciate your business". So I'm with ya. I'll pay full price if I have to.

I think VZW is going to screw themselves over, and are acting rather arrogant on this. Folks that do the math, repeatedly show a significant savings buying the phone outright versus re-upping at new contracted prices and durations. What this new data implementation encourages, is to do exactly that: bail on your contracted services, full price phones from now on with a cheap grandfathered plan. That cannot be a long-term upside strategy. Their arrogance is that they bet their churn will remain low because they're 'the biggest fastest' yadda yadda, which really isn't a competitive advantage, when a customer is weighing real dollars.

Which is even a worse scenario...frustrate your customer WHILE gouging him, I'd simply drop the service, like I did to cable, then to satellite.
