I'm ready for a smaller phone again. I was using my Moto x2014 and my S3 this morning. I really like that form factor of 5" screen with minimal bezels.

Pixel (small) sans bezels would be my preference. Although, if Samsung is going to keep the headphone jack, that may be my next phone. I'd have probably already gone Samsung instead of pixel if it weren't for needing root.

Just wondering what you ended up deciding? Inquiring minds want to know.

Just read an interesting article on upcoming processors. I always wondered why Samsung didn't use the Exynos in US phones. Sounds like a patent issue?

Ok...sorry to keep everyone in suspense!

So I had a couple weeks with both the Essential Phone PH-1 and the Galaxy Note 8 (Verizon).

    Essential PH-1:
    1) I fell in love with this phone the instant saw it. Beautifully crafted high quality pure gorgeous slab factor. I can't tell you what a premium feel this phone has.
    2) It had beautiful screen display - very high quality IPS screen. I've always preferred IPS screens. Colors were natural clear and vibrant.
    3) The back is made of ceramic which is more scratch resistant than glass and more durable (they say)... It was beautiful and felt awesome, but it's a terrible fingerprint magnet.
    4) I wasn't sure if I'd like the cyclops front facing camera at the top of the visible screen, but after a day I really didn't notice it. The advantages of the extra screen size (and increased screen to phone ratio) far far outweigh the aesthetic of that cyclops camera eye. Some apps didn't take advantage of the extra screen at the top so it appeared black, other apps full integrated it and worked around it. Google Maps was awesome on it. In the end I don't care that it looked a little odd because it was implemented nicely and integrated well into design language from app developers.
    5) Stock android - almost. It's about a month behind true stock android, but updates monthly, Oreo beta available, but didn't mess with it. LOVE stock android! Zero pre-loaded apps and you have total control. Beautiful.
    6) Fast, I mean really fast. Kind of what you'd expect from stock (almost).
    7) Camera: passable minimum quality. Totally useless and featureless built in app. Daylight was fine - forget taking pics at night. They did update and improve a couple things though in their monthly updates - I suspect that will continue.
    8) Battery Life: Very good - I was getting 5-7 hours SOT and still had 20% at the end of the day. I recharge overnight each night.
    9) LED Notification Light... so small it never caught my attention - may as well not be on there.
    10) Speaker: Typical one speaker affair...
    11) Wireless Charging: Nope. I thought it wouldn't bother me not to have wireless charging. I was wrong.
    12) Reception/Connection Stability: The Achilles heel of the device. I got slightly worse signal compared to all my previous phones. Despite the signal not being as strong it didn't affect the performance while in use. What did happen was that for periods of time it would lose connection entirely, and not reconnect until I unlocked the phone and suddenly it would sync. Also, I'd be sitting at my desk and I'd get notifications that I have voice mail, but the phone never rang! I tried a few different network modes, but none of them solved the issue.
    13) The nail in the coffin: After 10 days of use, the phone would randomly reboot - like 5-10 times a day - didn't matter what you were doing - it could be off and not in use and it would reboot - you could be watching YouTube and it would reboot. You could be reading an article and it would reboot.

Suffice it to say I returned the Essential Phone. It's just not ready for prime-time. I lived with the Verizon Galaxy Nexus debacle with it's terrible network connection reliability and several other issues and broken promises (by both Samsung and Verizon) - I simply did not want to relive any part of that again with the Essential phone.

I wound up with the Note 8 on a steal of a deal from Best Buy - $350 off the price - had to sign up for 24 month payments, but they view the $350 as a down payment so I can pay the entire device off with no penalty (which I will do!)

So after having the Note 8 for 3 weeks, all I can say is holy crayola - I can't believe how far Samsung has come along in both hardware and software.

I liked the S3 despite fighting with it from time to time and my experience with the Samsung Galaxy Nexus was terrible so I have never been a hard core advocate for Samsung, but this Note 8 very well may change that!

If you'd ask me to compare the Note 8 to the Essential, I simply can't - the Note 8 is literally superior in every way. Even with the display - that display is amazing - I am now a convert to OLED now - on max resolution the text is unreal and clear - just pops.

While I would have been happy and proud to own the Essential if it didn't have connection and reboot problems, I am absolutely thrilled with the Note 8. I feel like a kid on Christmas morning!

So, there you have it - Note 8 for the win!
