    New Device! Nexus7

Just picked up a new nexus7 this afternoon. Haven't unlocked it yet, but sure will soon. Any tips, advice on what roms and kernels to look for?

I got one Wednesday. If you haven't already done it you should sign up on the Nexus 7/Nexus 10 sister forum to this one. I used Wug's Nexus Root Toolkit v1.6.3 to root and unlock yesterday. As others have commented it took me awhile to get my PC to connect with the right drivers but once I did the process is really painless. Others in the forum have mentioned problems they've had with their new Nexus 7's (random reboots, freezing, touch problems) but I haven't noticed any of that. I haven't spent any time researching roms and kernels yet. The main reason I decided to root right away was for an easy way to transfer/update game data from my S3 to N7.

CleanROM is very popular as it's pretty much an optimized bare bones stock setup.
Paranoid Android has some, I think, alpha builds.
Remember, it's been through 3 software revisions since launch, with most likely a couple more before they fix (or not) the 4 issues plaguing a small but persistent number of units shipped.
The mainstream Devs may be waiting for a more 'final' release to base on.

EDIT: Never mind. Didn't notice that VG had already referred you there.

Signed up. Guess it's time to read up. Good thing I am off to NJ this week for work training and I'll need some stuff to do in the hotel.

ROMs are *not* interchangeable. Make sure you get one for flo (2013), not grouper (2012).

It's getting there. Devs need to have the device before they can turn out ROMs.
