There is a covered bridge in Frankenmuth, MI. I believe your explanation regarding covered bridges is correct.

It is a different experience to drive over a rickety boarded covered bridge.

I have pictures of that somewhere... There are also some old ones up by Baldwin and Big Rapids on the bike trails. They used to be railroad crossings...
With the end of the season comes countless hours of longing to be back in the woods with bow in hand and the chase in your heart.

I'm not sure if you already know this or not but The Bridges Of Madison County is a book that was turned into a movie starring Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood.
The author of the book wrote a song called Madison County Waltz.

VG, you are great ! I learn lots of things from you...

1-I shall stream this film with Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep , 2 actors I quite like.

2-from a purely linguistic point of view, how do you explain the two "woody" words lumber and timber... timber is a higher grade wood, I presume. (why do you
shout "timber!!" and not "lumber!!" when felling trees ?

Thanks, JL. Always happy to share knowledge and experiences with friends. I think that's one of the things we all love about this forum.

Timber can take on a few different meanings. It can mean a heavily wooded area. So we could say: "Miller went into the timber to hunt deer." Timber could also be a large wooden beam.

Lumber is what you call wood after it has been cut into standard lengths. Here in the U.S. that would include 2x4's. These are boards cut roughly 2 inches thick and 4 inches wide. They can be varying lengths. 2x4's are typically used in building construction to frame walls.

Hope that helps clear up the difference.

What a great explanation! I've been wondering that too, but didn't think to ask here. Thanks, VG 👍
