Samsung Galaxy S III Got a Boost to RAM to Make it 'Future Proof' for Jelly Bean

Apparently, Samsung wasn't taking any risks with the Galaxy S III phone as far as being compatible for the future with Android 4.1/Jelly Bean. According to a report over at The Verge, Samsung wasn't 100% sure what the final hardware specs of Jelly Bean would be, so to make sure their new flagship phone stayed "future proof" they upped the RAM to 2GB just to accomodate any eventuality. The source of their info was not able to give them any details of how long it will be before the SGS3 will get Jelly Bean, but since it isn't dramatically different than Ice Cream Sandwich, it is entirely possible that it may not take too long. At least Samsung can be rest-assured that the hardware is more than capable. Kudos to Sammy for being forward thinking.

This is the exact same thing that Apple faced. Their phones prior to the i4 couldn't keep pace with the ever growing firmware's demands on the hardware. Mostly the ram.

I can't believe though that Sammy gave the S3 2GBs of ram for JellyBean. That's fishy.

Kinda makes sense though since Jellybean boosts the framerate to 60fps.....more ram would definitely be needed for this.

This is all speculation, so I guess the European Version is not JB compatible, nonsense. The new Galaxy Tab7 has only 1GB of Ram and will run JB just fine.

It is all speculation, but remember the European version (as well as the new Nexus7) is quad core and the US version is dual core. So adding an extra gig of ram to the dual core makes sense.

Allows for extra buffering, yeah. Preload/buffer more of the video file and then less of a struggle to keep up, especially if the user wants to do something else.

On the other hand, most people don't get locked into 2-year contracts in other countries for a subsidized phone. In some places it's actually illegal, so replacing a phone for them often happens a lot sooner than later. Who knows?

That's a good point right there. One of the reasons I looked this direction was because I'm "all in" w/ the Android system and want the cutting edge.

Having said that, I guess it depends on who you are and what you do with your phone. There is a guy that I work with that dropped his Android phone in the sink and it stopped working.

He came back the next week with an iPhone4S. Pulled it out of his pocket and said "Look what I have"......
....I said "Oh, so you're moving from Android to Apple huh?" and he said "I can't tell the difference." (seriously and with a straight face)

I smiled and said "Oh! O.K." and besmirchingly giggled right in front of him.

So it just goes to show you. Not everyone cares. Then again, I guess there are different levels of geekiness. Like those people that join forums and talk about phones. THOSE people are wacky!

CPU core numbers and Ram are two completely different animals, because one has more ram and the other has more cores makes no difference in regards to an OS upgrade.

Yeah, I understand the difference, I'm thinking they added the extra ram to offset the the lack of quad core.
The news just out today is they made quad core compatible with LTE. so who knows what their reasoning was. All we can do is speculate.
