Yep.. The real time spent with this phone is learning curve in finding and understanding the procedures. As things stabilize hopefully we'll get all the proven solid stuff maybe in a do-all thread.

Lots of people reporting the update is force installing. They decline it and it attempts to install anyways before the given 24 hours. OR they wake up and the phone is in recovery - they were not given the chance to deny the installation it auto-installed.

This is legal gray area for a few reasons. One, its not their phone anymore to be forcing anything to. Also, in the case of an emergency, and your phone was doing an auto-update, and you couldn't reach E911 services, that's lawsuit material right there.

However, as my understanding part of this update is a dumbed down search. I really wouldn't be surprised if that was induced by the Samsung/Apple strife. One of the reasons they are putting the GSIII down as a potential ban is the universal search that Apple "supposedly" invented (we are all well aware universal search has been around for decades... correct?) Anyways, I wouldn't be surprised if this was pushed from some higher beings to get this update out and installed on all GSIII handsets so Apple doesn't have that claim to fall on.

BTW you still only need to worry about it regardless if you are stock or stock/rooted with stock recovery. If you have CWM installed the OTA can't install (OTA's don't play nice with CWM) and if you freeze the updater apks (FWUpgrader and the other mentioned a couple pages back) you'll be fine. But they are effectively using those apps to force OTAs on the ones that aren't attempting to actively block it like us root users.

And of course if you are on a custom ROM just ignore everything cuz you won't get an OTA; period. Just flash the radio firmware and call it good, that's really about the only benefit to you anyways.

Good info. I strongly suspect that whatever you sign to operate a phone on vzw gives them the authority to auto update your device if they deem it necessary. Why wouldn't they put that language in there? Nobody reads those things. I definitely think its a bad idea. What if you are a doctor on call? What if your wife is going into labor and trying to call you? What if you are stranded trying to call AAA and the update bricks your phone? Not good to force users.

This is why there are disclaimers everywhere you look when rooting/romming your device. It's the risk we take. John Q public isn't going to mind the auto update overall imo.

I put off the first update for an hour or so. After that the phone kept reminding me to do it.
    It went very smoothly.
