Trying to use less data

I want to try an limit my data usage as much as possible. When it's on wifi it's fine but I want to limit it when it's not on wifi.
I've seen an option on the settings and when I click on specific apps it says something about foreground and background data. I have no idea what this means.
I've set the data limit and the warning in the settings but is there more I can do?

So glad I still have my unlimited data and don't have to worry about it. 15 to 30 GB could get expensive

To actually answer your question...

You could try an app like Tasker that sets profiles at various times of day so times when you're normally home you have the WiFi enabled by default. Another option is to turn data off when you know you won't be needing it -- if Samsung didn't provide a widget to do that for you there's at least a dozen in the Play Store, I'd warrant, so just enable it whenever you need to use mobile data.

Beyond that, carefully monitor whatever apps are installed and see if they're using data or not. If they are and you don't use them, consider using the built-in hide/freeze option in the settings to hide them and prevent them from running.

My data toggle is in my notification bar drop down. I toggle it frequently over here in this country. At home I never use it because of unlimited data.

You can also see what is using your data by opening the Settings app and selecting Data. It lists the apps that are using data and how much they have used. In the same section you can set a data monitor to alert you to percentages of your monthly data allowances.

Inside of the Settings app is also Accounts and Sync. You can disable auto syncing of Google related services.

The only app that I have seen that has to have synchronization is the Market app.
