I actually like the clock removed. I have a watch and a home screen to keep me informed of the time. So let me know how it goes.

I am pretending to work at work today so no playing.

Found a statusbar.xml from 4.0.4 that is SUPPOSED to be center clock. I'm making a nandroid now and will swap that into systemui.apk. Cross fingers.

Edit: no dice. Swapped in another xml from 4.0.4 that is supposed to have center clock. Wall paper was reset so I know that it took, but there is no change to status bar. This phone must use an xml other that statusbar.xml.

Yes i noticed after I did your edit with NinjaMorph I have an Unlock symbol when the phone boots and my ROM toolbox does not work for the icons now that I am off the default framework.

Yeah, I saw that unlock thing also. Weird. Are you sure the unlock thing isn't a result of flashing CWM?

Maybe that unlock thing that says custom is samsungs way of telling the user that a custom rom is installed. And if so, it probably checks framework and systemui as an indicator of custom rom.

I'm going to restore my stock nandroid and see if it goes away.
    Edit: restoring now

Well being I never used adb and flashed CWM I would say, "yes, I am sure"

OK, on stock nandroid no lock. Back on my setup and I had no lock on first boot and then on reboot I had it. Now to replace w/ stock systemui and framework to see if it goes away.
Edit: replaced framework.apk and systemui.apk with stock ones and I have the lock logo on first reboot.
Edit2: My icon is back and custom lock on boot is still here on second boot. Now powering down and rebooting.

Read over on XDA that several folks have this. The consensus is that the icon is a visual display, at boot, that custom firmware have been loaded. The fact that you noticed it right after messing with systemui.apk means that this may be one of the files that is "checked" upon boot.

I have again restored my stock nandroid and I maintain my custom unlock icon. I will reboot a few times to see if it dissapears.
Reboot and it's gone. No lock saying custom. I have now rebooted 3 times (dang this thing reboots fast) and no lock.

So, I'm concluding that altering the stock systemui.apk is at least one cause for this custom lock icon to appear.

    spodoc and debian,

you guys rule! thanks for taking the time to look at this issue! i knew i wasn't the only one hating that stoopid GPS icon in the status bar...

I've been too busy with work and all the past couple of days to mess with my phone, but very shortly, maybe tonight, I will delve into rooting and tackling this annoyance.

Couldn't you just edit the png to match your wallpaper background? Fo r example, I use a black background. If I edit the gps png's to be black dots it should fool the custom check. I'll try it when I have some time.

I'm away from my computer a few days. You can copy any. Apk file to your computer and change the extension to. Zip. Then you can just unzip the contents and find the png file. Ninjamorph made a backup of your Apk file.
