I don't think it is that simple but I am on the same quest. I replaced the horrid battery icon using the ROM TOOLBOX.

One way to do this is to find the .png file and just delete it. I just did this for my battery icons. I now have only a % in the status bar, not the battery icon.

After some reading and testing, I see that this icon changes to indicate to you whether you have any of the three location services turned on. My next step is to find the pair of icons that are displayed (the on and the off) and then kill those icons. I'll post results when I have them.

Disclaimer: Do not attempt this if you don't have a nandroid backup and/or are not comfortable flashing your phone if you brick it. This method alters and replaces crtical system apk files. If you've never used ninjamorph, well then you need to go read. I'll try to answer questions and help.

    In ninjamorph:
open a project with systemui.apk, then exit ninjamorph

    In a file browser:
    go to sdcard\AndroidThemes\workspace\SystemUIapk\res\dra wable-hdpi\
    delete stat_sys_location_on_2.png and stat_sys_location_e911_2.png

    In ninjamorph:
    finish the systemui project

Once it is done, immediately hit power and reboot the phone. If you don't do this quickly before something uses systemui.apk, then the phone will freeze and you'll have to battery pull. After the reboot, you should be AOK and without those annoying GPS icons.

Edit: I just figured out that you can delete files within ninjamorph. So the steps where you delete files from within the file browser, well you can just do it all in ninjamorph and save time.

Now to figure out how to center clock and adjust font size. I'm really resisting learning how to edit xml files.

Just booted my phone, if you were here I would give you a hug and/or buy you a beer. SO glad to see that stupid icon gone.

Glad it worked. I just get hung up on stuff like that and can't let it go. Glad I have the day off to fiddle. I'm confused now on this APK tool thing. I just want to edit a stupid binary xml file.

    REALLY wanting a centered clock.
