If you hit the sound toggle to vibrate or mute it should shut the sound off while taking a picture if that's what you meant

When I do that, it just zooms in or out

I meant the toggle from your notification tray, not volume rocker.

With the camera on? I don't have a sound option in the settings

Will deleting the shutter sound have any adverse affects to the camera app ?

No, that would work. But I would just rename it in case you needed to put it back to stock in the future. You can just change the extension to .BAK or something. Or you can use an app like ShutUp Camera.

Ok so how exactly do you do this? I went through my phones files and couldn't find a "shutter sound" file. Also tried to mute etc. to no avail.
Here's to us!
You need to be rooted and use a root file browser like Root Browser Lite. They're stored in /system/media/audio/ui.
I also found a post on another forum with an alternative method that also requires root.
Camera shutter sound off/on? - Android Forums
I renamed my shutter back and tried this method and it also works. If you are rooted then you can enable the shutter sound menu item by adding
to /system/csc/feature.xml (or changing false to true if it isn't already there).Code:<CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>true</CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>
This worked for me on a UK international SGS3.
