    Rooting for dummies!

    Hi all,
I am interested in rooting my S3 GT-19305t, but have never done this kind of thing before.
I read through some of the threads for first time rooters, but I was thinking a step-by-step guide would help people like me.

    Maybe something like this...
    1) Back-up files from phone's internal memory. (Not sure if this is necessary or not.)
    2) Identify phone model. (Settings > About)
    3) Choose appropriate ROM. (How?)
    4) Download files/software (Where?)

Is there anywhere here I can find an easy step-by-step walkthrough like this, or is it more complicated than I think?

    Thanks everyone.

    Welcome to the forum!

Have a look at this: [CWM][GT-I9305] CF-ROOT CWM Recovery Ported + SuperSu + BusyBox - xda-developers - and you'll get an idea what's involved. I am not a technician, so I can't really answer questions on that link. I simply plugged "rooting Samsung GT-19305t" into Google and that link was one of the entries. Read through it and understand what's involved before trying anything. Any questions, bring them back here for our technical people to answer. Be careful about asking any questions on XDA Forums - they're great innovators, but they have no patience and if you ask a question in the wrong forum, they'll jump down your throat in a heart beat.

    Good luck!

    Thank you so much

    ...
    11. When the phone reboot, power it off again.
    12. Put the phone in recovery mode.
    13. After that you can flash the Root_SuperSU.1.02-Busybox.1.21.0.zip to be ROOTED to any firmware (how?) and make a backup and restore of your firmware (how?), also you can now flash any custom rom / kernel made for GT-I9305.
How do I do any of this.., what does it all mean?

Thanks heaps everyone for the replies.

After step 12. my phone is sitting at an 'Android system recovery' menu.

    Options are;
    reboot system now
    apply update from ADB
    apply update from external storage
    wipe data/facotry reset
    wipe cache partition
    apply update from cache

Do I copy that 'Root SuperSU 1.02 Busybox to an SD card, and apply update from external storage?

See this: http://www.android.gs/recovery-mode-galaxy-s3/ - for an explanation of what Recovery Mode is, and how to access it. It even has a video for you to watch.

Ok, I followed the link and it showed me how to get into recovery mode.
There is another link explaining how to install ClockWorkMod. Is that my next step?

You can flash CWM or TWRP. TWRP is my choice but either will work fine.

Ok, well I copied Root_SuperSU1.02-Busybox onto an SD card, went into recovery mode and chose the "apply update from external storage" option.
    I got error messages
E: failed to verify whole-file signature
    E: signature verification failed.

    This is what I have done so far;
    1. Download Odin
    2. Download I9305_CWM_Recovery.tar.md5
    3. Unzip Odin to your desktop.
    4. Copy the I9305_CWM_Recovery.tar.md5 to the same directory.
    5. Boot your SGS in to download mode.
(Power off and then press and hold the power + volume down + home buttons at the same time) It is down btw?
    6. Connect your phone to your PC using the cable that came with it.
    7. If Kies is running on your pc shut it down.
    8. Open the Odin application.
    9. Choose PDA button and select the I9305_CWM_Recovery.tar.md5.
    10. Press start and wait. Your phone will be flashed and reboot when it is finished.
    11. When the phone reboot, power it off again.
    12. Put the phone in recovery mode.
(Hold down power, volume up and home when the device is turned off and unplugged.) I had to press DOWN.

And this is where I am.
Step 13. After that you can flash the Root_SuperSU.1.02-Busybox.1.21.0.zip to be ROOTED to any firmware.

So I downloaded SuperSU.1.02-Busybox.1.21.0.zip onto an SD card, and chose 'Apply update from external storage' then got those error messages.

    What do I do from here? DO I now follow the "How to install CWM Recovery on Galaxy S3 using Odin3:" steps? Which means;

    Downloading another CWM Recovery file.
Then go to ODIN and make sure that the ‘repartition’ option is unchecked. Click START.
When the CWM Recovery will be successfully installed, your device will restart and that’s the last step you had to take...

    and then that's it?

From Install ClockWorkMod ( CWM ) Recovery On Samsung Galaxy S3
9.) -Now, connect your Galaxy S3 to your PC.
10.) -Go to ODIN and make sure that the ‘repartition’ option is unchecked.
11.) -Now you can click START.
12.) -When the CWM Recovery will be successfully installed, your device will restart and that’s the last step you had to take...

Now, that your device has the ClockworkMod Recovery installed, it means that you can now root your Galaxy S3 (with ROMs I assume)
    Rooting:
    1) Download the CWM-SuperSU .zip file and save it on your computer. <--- (This link is dead so I just used "Root_SuperSU.1.02-Busybox.1.21.0.zip" from UltraDroid's link <[CWM][GT-I9305] CF-ROOT CWM Recovery Ported + SuperSu + BusyBox - xda-developers>)
    2) Move the SuperSU zip on your phone’s internal or external sdcard.
    3) Now, disconnect the device from your computer and power it off.
    4) Boot into CWM Recovery by pressing ‘volume up’ + ‘home’ + ‘power’ buttons. Note that you have to release power button after 1 second but you should still keep the other buttons 5) pressed until your phone boots into recovery mode.
    6) Now, select ‘install zip from sdcard’.

But, there is no 'install zip' option.
    Here's what's on the screen.

    ----------------------------------
    Android system recovery <3a>

    Volume up/down to move highlight:
    Power button to select.
    ----------------------------------
    OPTIONS:

    -Reboot system now.
    -Apply update from ADB
    -Apply update from external storage
    -Wipe data/factory reset
    -Wipe cache partition
    -Apply update from cache

    As mentioned earlier, when I chose the "Apply update from external storage" option, I get errors;
E: failed to verify whole-file signature
    E: signature verification failed.
