    Custom ring tones

I recorded a sound, saved it as an mp3 file and copied it to the Ringtones folder. I then went to settings, sound, phone ringtone and selected the new file. It played the sound correctly. When I receive a call it does not play, one of the totally useless Samsung tunes plays.

I then selected it as a custom sound for a particular person and it does play correctly when she calls.

Have I missed a vital step? I really do not like any of the supplied tunes.

Using a program like RingDroid usually makes it easier

    Welcome to the forum!

I'm going to give another plug for Ringdroid here. It's a great app.

Having said that, did you verify that the changes you made to the ringtone settings were saved? Sometimes they don't always take the first time if we don't do it 100% correctly.

I'm going to hijack this thread but only a little.

What makes a ringtone a ringtone?
Is there any real functional difference between an Mp3 ringtone and any other Mp3 sound file?
Can I use any run of the mill sound editor to create or edit a ringtone ~ alias an Mp3 file?

As far as I can determine, the only considerations for a ringtone might be to not make them too long and not to make them too high a bit rate. Any other suggestions?

    Thanks
    Dave

Yes, you can use any editor to create the file. I am about to see if Ogg files work. Excellent quality at a smaller file size.

You can drop a whole song into /sdcard/ringtones and have it work.

Thanks. BTW, While ago, I converted some Ogg files to Mp3 for a friend. Used a free convertor.

Custom is the only way to go. Still using my "Mission Impossible" ringtone I made for my DX.

I love the "ring" in the beginning and then the spy/will self destruct aspect that follows.
