    Syncing Contacts and Calender

    Hello all,

I just purchased the new S3. This is my first droid after having iPhone's for 5 years.

I haven't synced anything yet because I don't want to mess things up but I understand that Droid's work with gmail for contacts and calenders.

I have my gmail account setup and all my contacts are on my phone.

Can someone please walk me through what I have to do to sync my contacts to my gmail account?

    Welcome geo!

There is a way to do this with outlook from your computer. It's the way I did it when I got the DROID x. But I can't remember the instructions. Let me see if I can find something for you. If not I'm sure someone can at least point you in the right direction.

Edit - Sorry got busy at work.... Read through Google sync.. Looks like there's some good info.

    Thanks Maybish!

I have the contacts synced and my calender should be as well but just need to add my events to confirm.

Now that my contacts are synced with gmail, my phone is showing an "Integrated groups" with a subcategory of "My contacts" and then "Accounts" with a subcategory of "My contacts" (Google system group). Why does it show these two separate groups? When I synced my iPhone with iCloud, my phone would only show 1 "group" so I'm a bit confused about this.

I wish I had more info for you, Geo. I don't have any sub-categories because I've had several android phones so all my contacts have been directly in Gmail for years now. I save all contact info that way and never save to phone so it will automatically show in any device I use.

This will probably not be the last thing you'll need to figure out/tweak as you switch to android. But the folks hear are knoweldable and helpful so you are in the right place.

That's the way Andriod handles it when you sync. You do have the option to display or hide catagories. In my case I created a custom List. If you only want to see contacts with a phone number you can do so.

@ Da2Zoe: Your post explained what I was looking for actually.

@ Jeffrey: Where is the option of "Contacts to Display"? After looking online I don't see that option. I go to Contacts but then there is no "Settings" so that I can view the "Contacts to Display". **EDIT**: To find "Contacts to Display" we have to go to Contacts>Menu>then SCROLL up to see the remaining options hidden down under the fold and you will see "Contacts to Display". A bit tricky there but we got it! LOL

I think this is my issue: At the AT&T store, I transferred my contacts from my iPhone to my S3. I did not have my gmail account setup and they simply used a machine to do this transfer between both phones. So it only makes sense that those contacts were saved to the phone itself (not gmail). Then last night I synced between gmail (which gmail had no contacts at all as I never used it before). After that sync I had the same number of contacts in gmail as I had in my phone. So are you all telling me that the contacts are saved on the phone itself as well as in gmail but both will show on the phone?

How do you sync contacts and calendar with Outlook? My HTC phone had a sync software to do it.

I use a inexpensive program called Companionlink that links my Outlook on my laptop to Google on line which in turn links to my phone. Works good for me.
