No File Transfer Size Limits w/SD Card - 5GB..6GB..even 9GB files OK

    Hi All,

I didn't see mention of this Great News! in a forum search.

The S3 can now transfer individual files over 4GB to an SD card (must format card first). No more splitting movies into parts and such. The new OS in the phone now accepts the exFat file system which doesn't have that old 4GB limits (Fat32). For gosh sakes it's 2012, about time huh? I transferred some large individual movie files all over 5GB with no problems using a USB cable.

Before installing your new SD card in the phone:
    1. Put the card in a Windows 7 PC using the adapter
    2. Format the card to "exFat" by selecting the File System drop down. Leave on "Quick Format"
    3. Now put the card in the phone. Transfer files with no worries. (You can load data on the card before putting in the phone).

I purchased this 32GB w/Adapter which oddly enough.
Came in this "Made for Android" package.

Just another ad for these Sandisk.

I formatted my 64 GB card in the phone then transferred a 30 GB folder my first go at it. 27 MP4 movies. I use the Mobile Ultra Class 6 card. Zero issues.

    Hi Igo,
This process is for those who transfer "individual" files that are over 4GB. I did the same as you, used the phone "Format" but it wouldn't accept individual files (not folders) over 4GB.

Hey BJ what did that card cost and where did you get it?

I got that card (32 GB, Class 10, UHS-1) for $30 on Amazon. Prime eligible (if ya got it!) or free Super Saver.

Amazon.com: SanDisk Ultra 32 GB microSDHC Class 10 UHS-1 Memory Card 30MB/s with Adapter SDSDQUA-032G-U46A: Computers & Accessories

I would highly recommend - IMHO, Sandisk makes some of the best, fastest, and most reliable micro SDs. Have never trusted any other brand for micros. Best thumb stick I ever got was a Rally 2, but for micro's I ALWAYS recommend Sandisk. For cost, reliability, etc. etc.

Also keep in mind on the Verizon S3's this method does not currently work. (If you are running a custom kernel) Because our kernel source is not available yet (Samsung hasn't released it yet) we can't support exFat on custom kernels. It will happen (eventually) but the kernel chefs are waiting on Samsung source to drop first.

It also can't mount in CWM for doing backups, even with Stock OS.

I don't know. I started it. Ate a sandwich and when I came back it was done.

What's the difference between the SanDisk prime and the non prime & also what's the difference between the SanDisk ultra and the mobile ultra cards? They also are around $60-$65

its all about the speed man, your average write/read from a usb 2.0 from 2-3 years ago was like 3-5mb/s

i bought a usb 3.0 of 32gb that writes/reads at 50-60mb/s and i copied a 4gb file (single file) to my usb in less than 1 min.

there are class 10 cards that write at 10mb, this ultra from sandisk writes up to 30mb (i bought a samsung already for 22 dlls in ebay ) but im cheap >.> and samsung is good for micro sd's too (my 8gb one is pretty solid still)

I understand all about the transfer rate speed but all those cards I mentioned are rated @ 30mb per second. I don't get the small price difference in these SanDisk cards.
