Paying with phone? How did he do that?

I was in a store the other day and the guy in front of me pulls out his cell phone and holds it up to the atm card reader and the clerk says..."I got it" and rang it up....It wasn't an Iphone it was some kind of droid. I'm wondering how he did it? It looked like he was using one of those "pay on the go" things like Exxon had.....Was it an NFC chip? Surely we have this ability with the best smart phone in the world?

He probably was using the Galaxy Nexus and used the NFC payment utility with Google Wallet, coming soon to the S3 from what Ive heard.

Just did a little more research, Apparently Verizon, At&t and T-Mobile are making a competing service to Google Wallet called ISIS, which is why all the phones that currently support Google wallet are Sprint phones with the exception of the Play Store and Verizon versions of the Galaxy Nexus. Other that that It could have only been one of five phones and 31 locations

yea....I think you're right it was Google wallet! I think he had an EVO....I went to google wallet only to find out that only Sprint G3 users can use it....Why is VZW leaving us out in the cold? The NFC technology was one of the cool features I bought this phone for and other than transfer a pic to another S3 user It is wasted! I emailed big Red let's see how fast I get the form "we're sorry" email back...

Prolly Google Wallet... I have it on my Verizon phone and the confused stares from store clerks is worth the pain it took to get it working right lol!
As stated, you have to be rooted though.

Here's what I got back! surprising not a form letter...

"Thanks so much not only for taking the time out of your day to contact our team in regards to Google Wallet and your Galaxy S III, but also for your patience in waiting for our response. My name is Evan and I’ll make sure you get all the information you requested.

Right off the bat, this is perfect because I got the S III about a month ago and I’m eagerly anticipating the release of Google Wallet as well. After all, it really seems like it would make life easier for spending. Anyways, let me start by letting you know everything that I know.

So, there have been some reports that our company is supposedly blocking Google Wallet on all our phones. But, that’s actually false since we don’t block any apps. Google Wallet is somewhat different from other services since it doesn’t utilize the operating system or hardware of our devices like the rest of the applications do. In order to work properly as intended by Google, it needs to be worked into a new element of our devices for security. With fraud the way it is these days, we’re currently working with Google to release something flawless. But, it’s possible that this could come with simply a software update when it’s pushed out for the S III.
We’re in the same boat and I hear you loud and clear. But definitely don’t worry as I promise we’ll not leave you in the dark nor out in the cold on this one.

Without a doubt, it was a real pleasure to provide you with outstanding customer service in order to resolve all of your concerns. Mike, we appreciate your communication with us and thanks again for being the best part of the Verizon Wireless team. Have a tremendous rest of your week!"

a security element? Dam I hate when that happens....Maybe we will see google wallet.....

I'm more interested in that line. I thought they were blocking tethering apps as well until the latest FCC fine? I suppose he's being truthful in that the FCC just levied the fine and they've changed their ways but trust and VZW reps, no matter their paygrade, don't mix well together.
